Azerbaijan bans Hijab for teachers

The Republic of Azerbaijan has banned female Muslim teachers from wearing headscarves at schools across the country.
Ajdar Aghayev, the chairman of Azerbaijan Education Council, said the ban will take effect in the new school year, adding that the move is aimed at “creating unity in teachers’ dress code.”

Aghayev also said that teachers not wearing hijab can set a model for students so that they, too, observe the school’s rules of a uniform dress code and no headscarves.

The measure comes just days after over 130,000 people signed a petition, calling on Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev to remove the ban on hijab at schools.

Azerbaijani officials have been preventing Muslim schoolgirls who wear headscarves from attending schools since December 2010.

Baku also bans Azeris from openly observing their religious rites.

The government’s anti-religion agenda in Azerbaijan has caused uproar in the predominantly Muslim nation.

Azerbaijanis want the government to respect religious values and prevent the country from falling into a crisis.
