A bomb attack targeting a group of anti-ISIL Sunni militiamen at a military base near the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has killed at least 24 people.

An attacker blew himself up on Wednesday morning in the midst of the group of pro-government militants that had gathered at the army post south of the Iraqi capital city to collect their monthly payments.

Initial reports said 10 militiamen and three soldiers were killed in the bombing but latest reports raised the number of fatalities to 24, citing Iraqi police and security officers.

More than 38 others have also been listed as wounded in the bombing attack.

The targeted Sunni militiamen were reportedly from a group known as Sahwa, who had joined government forces during the wave of armed militancy in the country against government.

An unnamed Iraqi medical official who spoke on condition of anonymity has reportedly confirmed the casualty figures.

The Takfiri ISIL terrorist group continues to control some parts of Syria and Iraq. The ISIL terrorists have engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control, including mass murdering local civilians as well as captured army and security officers while terrorizing people from diverse communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
