Bahrain uprising to reignite in Ramadan

Saudi-backed regime forces in Bahrain continue to crack down on opposition demonstrators who have been demanding an end to the Al-Khalifa regime.

Press TV talks with Ali al-Ahmed, director of Washington-based Institute for [Persian] Gulf Affairs (I[P]GA), for his view on this issue.

Press TV: We have protests here on a daily basis and continuing heavy handed crackdown. Where is this all heading at the end of the day, do you think?

al-Ahmed: I think this revolution is reigniting itself again. It has shown its resilience and Ramadan will prove to be a crucial time because the protestors will take advantage of the night time to expand their protests across Bahrain.

So we will see a reigniting of the uprising in Bahrain. Giving the fact that the people of Bahrain have proven that they are much more resilient than their crackdown and their invasion, and the international hypocrisy against them.

Press TV: Why is that the Bahraini government then continues to insist on ignoring the people’s demands and to keep this crackdown against them going?

al-Ahmed: The reason is that they feel that they are supported by Saudi Arabia, the Saudi army and other Gulf countries like the UAE and of course the United States, and Europe as well.

So they feel secure in the international support and the regional support coming from these countries.

If that support evaporates, you will see a different situation in Bahrain and it will erode. I can tell you that these people in these countries will not be able to stand or support to sustain this government, when people of Bahrain take their marches across Bahrain and to the palaces.

You know on Friday there will be a huge protest outside the American embassy and I think that is going to be a very important day for the people of Bahrain.
