BBC Covering Iran’s Election Despite Opposite Claims

An official in Iran’s ministry of culture and Islamic guidance rejected the western media allegations that Tehran has now allowed the BBC to cover the Friday elections in Iran, stressing that the reporter of the British news channel is in Iran and covering the event.

“The reporter of the BBC English service is covering the election in Iran,” Mohammad Nasser Haqiqat told reporters in Tehran on Friday.

He reminded that the BBC has a bureau in Tehran and its media crew, hence, did not need to travel to the country.

Haqiqat reminded that over 450 reporters and correspondents from different world media, including Britain’s Channel 4 TV, the Times and the CNN, are in Iran and covering the elections.

The British Guardian daily said that “British journalists have suffered badly, apparently because of the tense relations between Tehran and London, where both countries’ embassies are closed”, adding that Tehran has not allowed the BBC to cover the Friday elections in Iran

A BBC News spokesman was quoted by the newspaper as saying, “We are disappointed that the BBC was not granted any visas to visit Iran to cover the election as it would have enabled us to give a more accurate and up to date perspective from the country.”

The BBC claims came as its English and Persian Services are both broadcasting their own news, reports, images and footages of the Iranian people and officials who have taken part in election.
