‘Beginning of end of US empire’ predicted

statue-of-liberty-drowning-340x255American activist Dan Patrick Welch said in an interview with Press TV that this month will be marked as “the beginning of the end of US empire.”

In a phone interview with Press TV, the activist made the comments about the latest remarks by US President Barack Obama at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

President Obama focused on Syria and Iran during his speech.

“What is really happening is that the US and its proxies are funding an illegal, an aggressive, an increasing vicious insurgency in Syria using their proxy elements like they did in Afghanistan, like they did in El Salvador, like they’ve done in countless countries in dirty wars.”

“The US through the CIA, through Saudi intelligence, through Israeli intelligence through all of its usual organs doesn’t care [about Syria],” Welch said.

“They want the end of the Assad regime because they want to confront China and Russia through Iran. That’s what is the great chessboard. That’s why they talk about chemical weapons as pure charade. They’re not interested in the Russian agreement or keeping it up,” he explained.

The analyst said the United States wants a “war of choice” to seek “regime change” in Syria.

“As far as Iran goes, the US is only interested in pursuing hegemony. They don’t really want to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons, even though that’s clearly not what’s happening and it would only act as further deterrent, but they want to control resource routs, they want an imperial outpost … to prevent China and Russia from reestablishing a multipolar world that existed before the collapse of the Cold War,” he said.

“In that sense, it’s discouraging because all of the diplomacy, all of the speeches don’t really matter, but in a broader sense as I think I talked to you before something big has happened this month,” Welch noted.

“I think that this month will be seen like historians as the beginning of the end of US empire and that’s has come about not because of pressure from within although the US economy is so bad that people are really, really tired of the wars, but it’s deterrent. Pure and simple,” he argued.

During his speech at the UN, Obama also mentioned to “the notion of American empire.”

“The United States has a hard-earned humility when it comes to our ability to determine events inside other countries. Now, the notion of American empire may be useful propaganda, but it isn’t borne out by America’s current policy or by public opinion. Indeed, as recent debates within the United States over Syria clearly show,” Obama said.

“It’s just time to try to put this genie back in the bottle. Because the US has launched war after war after war of choice … and the whole world is tired of it.”
