Syria held its presidential election despite efforts by the West and its anti-Damascus allies against the success of the vote.

President Bashar al-Assad won a landslide victory with over 88 percent of the vote.

The Supreme Constitutional Court of Syria announced that more than 73 percent of the 15.8 million eligible voters took part in the election.

International delegates observing the election also released a statement calling the vote democratic and transparent.

The high voter turnout sent a strong message to the international community that Syrians have chosen peaceful means over violence to end more than three years of turmoil in the country.
