A US military base in eastern Afghanistan has been hit by several blasts, amid clashes between the foreign forces and militants, Press TV reports.

The blasts were carried out in the border town of Torkham, Nangarhar Province, near Pakistan, during the early hours of Monday.

Local sources said there was an exchange of fire between the Taliban militants and US forces.

There has been no report of casualties. US and Afghan officials have confirmed the incident.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The second largest US military base after Jalalabad Airbase is located in Nangarhar. The base is used by US-led foreign forces to transfer military equipment from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

More than 120 US-led forces have been killed in Afghanistan so far in 2013. Most of the slain soldiers were American.

According to the website icasualties.org, 3,371 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

The rising death toll of foreign forces in the country has prompted growing opposition to the Afghan war in NATO member states and other countries that have contributed troops to the invasion.
