Gaddafi-UK secret messages revealed

A recent investigation by the Guardian newspaper has revealed Muammar Gaddafi’s secret messages to British Foreign Office and British PM David Cameron’s push for invading Libya.

The Guardian has revealed the British government concluded that the Libyan dictator should eventually be overthrown after he sent secret messages to British Foreign Office explaining about his intention of developing a political system like that in Britain.

In his secret messages, Gaddafi indicated that he intended to become a figurehead like the Queen asserting that he had been power as long as the Queen had. “It would be like the Queen of England, is how they thought of it,” the Guardian quoted one minister as saying.

“He would be a non-powerful president, not even in power. They would go as far as he would be a figurehead. But this was not on for the rebels, of course,” reported the newspaper quoting the minister.

Furthermore, the newspaper revealed that Britain took the lead in pushing for military operations that would exert excessive pressure on Gaddafi from the west of Libya while the French government, taking the lead in pushing for a no-fly zone, tried to overthrow Gaddafi from the east.

The Guardian also reported that some British government officials confirmed that France and Britain might have invaded Libya even if they could not secure a UN resolution.

Moreover, Cameron persuaded skeptical ministers and MI6 senior staff in order to authorize the invasion of Libya, which is considered to be the biggest gamble during his time in office.

Cameron’s success in overriding skepticism from MI6 officials came as they argued Gaddafi was a better partner maintaining, “It is better to stick with the devil you know.”

The newspaper reported that Gaddafi’s messages also frustrated British foreign secretary, William Hague, who developed his “Anaconda” plan to undermine Gaddafi’s position, believing Gaddafi overplayed his hand proposing to become a state figurehead like the Queen.
