Boko Haram kill teacher in NE Nigeria: Sources

346994_Boko-Haram-militantsSuspected members of the Boko Haram terrorist group have killed a teacher in a village in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, police and residents say.

The attackers stormed a house in the Wulgo village on the border with Chad late on Monday, and killed the head of a primary school, AFP reported on Tuesday.

The teacher’s housemate, who works in another school as a cook, was badly injured.

“We received report of an attack in Wulgo village by some gunmen, in which one person was killed and another one seriously wounded,” said Borno state police commissioner Lawan Tanko.

One of the residents said the militants “did not take anything from their victims, which ruled out the possibility of armed robbery.”

On May 15, the Nigerian army launched an offensive against the militant group a day after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in the three northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.

Boko Haram — whose name means “Western education is forbidden” — says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.

Over the past four-and-a-half years, violence in the north of Africa’s most populous country has claimed the lives of more than 3,600 people, including killings by the security forces.
