A bomb blast has hit south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, leaving at least two people dead.

According Lebanon’s Interior Ministry, the blast took place on Monday when an attacker detonated his explosives inside a van which had been used for public transportation in Choueifat area.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

The explosion came after Saturday’s car bomb attack killed at least five people in the border town of Hermel in northeastern Lebanon.

The UN Security Council issued a statement on the same day, urging Lebanese people to “preserve national unity in the face of attempts to undermine the country’s stability.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the deadly assault.

On January 16, four people were killed and over 30 others injured in a car bomb attack that was carried out near Hermel’s main square in front of a state building.

The al-Nusra Front claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The January 16 attack came about two weeks after a powerful car bomb blast hit the Haret Hreik neighborhood in Beirut, killing several people and injuring dozens of others.

The al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack two days later.

Beirut has been repeatedly targeted by similar terrorist attacks in recent months leaving a large number of casualties.
