Bomb explosion kills 15 Somalis in Mogadishu market

At least 15 people have been killed in a bomb explosion that ripped through a market in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, Press TV reports.

An explosive device was detonated in the Bakara Market on Thursday, instantly killing over a dozen people, mostly women, and leaving scores more wounded.

“The explosion happened at the jewelry section, where women were trading,” said a witness.

“We counted 13 bodies of those who died on the spot while several others were rushed to the hospital with injuries,” he added.

Other witnesses said two more people died on the way to the hospital. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Somalia has not had an effective central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

In August 2012, the Federal Government of Somalia took over from the embattled Transitional Federal Government, which had failed to patch up warring armed groups and restore peace despite support from African and Western governments.
