A bomber has detonated his explosives near the Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan’s capital, with no immediate information on possible casualties.

The blast occurred on Monday morning close to a checkpoint near the airport.

“A bomber on foot detonated his suicide vest… near Kabul airport,” Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish told AFP. “There is no immediate information on casualties.”

According to Danish, the bomber’s target was a convoy of foreign troops passing through the area. A police spokesman, however, said the bomber was not aware of that passage.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Friday, a car bomb hit a popular French restaurant in Kabul, killing two people and wounding 15 others. The Taliban militant group later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying its target was a convoy of foreign troops.

Another bomber detonated his vehicle near the Kabul airport last Monday, killing one civilian. Afghanistan is still gripped by insecurity 14 years after the US and its allies attacked the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. Although the 2001 attack overthrew the Taliban, many areas across Afghanistan still face violence and insecurity.
