Bombings in Egypt’s Alexandria leave about a dozen wounded

Five bomb explosions have rocked Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria, wounding nearly a dozen people.

Two bombs went off outside a police station in Montaza district in eastern Alexandria, injuring ten people.

A third explosion outside a police station in another neighborhood wounded one civilian. Two other bombs went off in the same area leaving no casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks, but the government in Cairo often blames such attacks on the militant group Ansar Bait al-Maqdis.

Bombings by anti-government militants are regular in the capital city of Cairo and Alexandria, although the focal point of the insurgency still remains in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where Ansar is mainly based.

Last week, a blast near a police checkpoint on the western outskirts of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria left two people wounded.

Egypt has seen a heavy-handed crackdown on supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood since the country’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, who was backed by the party, was ousted in July 2013.

The security remains tense in the Arab country after more than 20 people, most of them followers of the Brotherhood, were killed in a stampede outside of a football stadium in Cairo on February 8. The mayhem has caused deep anger over government’s tightening crackdown on dissent.
