Border guards arrest 39 foreign nationals in northwestern Iran

The Iranian border guards have arrested dozens of foreign nationals who were trying to cross Iran’s borders in the North-East illegally, a senior provincial commander announced on Monday.

“The border guards in (the Northwestern) West Azarbaijan province have arrested 39 foreign nationals who were making suspicious moves in an effort to cross the country’s border,” Commander of West Azarbaijan’s Border Guards Unit Brigadier General Shahram Abbasi told FNA today.

The commander said all the 39 have been handed over to the judicial authorities for further proceedings.

He noted that the West Azarbaijan’s border guards had arrested these foreign nationals during their reconnaissance, intelligence and patrol missions along the Northwestern borders.

Last month, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan underlined preparedness of the country’s military, security and intelligence forces to thwart any destabilizing threat to Iran’s borders, particularly in the West.
