Brazil’s subway strike causes chaos

The subway standoff continues in Brazil’s largest city Sao Paulo with no end in sight.

According to Press TV, the workers have decided to defy a court ruling against the strike there. The subway staff union voted on Sunday to extend the walkout hours after a labor court ruled it illegal, and imposed a heavy fine if it dragged on.

The union now must pay over two hundred thousand dollars for each day the strike continues and an extra forty-five thousands for the first four days.

The partial operation of the five-line subway system has maimed the public transport and stranded nearly four million commuters.

The latest social upheaval to hit Brazil started on Thursday over wage. The workers are demanding a 12-percent pay rise while employers are offering only nine percent.
