Syrian Army captures Palmyra Airport from ISIS

Hours following the liberation of the ancient desert city of Palmyra, units from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) backed by the Russian Air Force stormed the adjacent airbase east of the city.

After hours of intense clashes, the government forces managed to secure the airport and much of the orchards region south of the city paving a way for the upcoming assault on the Palmyra Silos which aims to safeguard the town’s eastern flanks.

It remains unknown whether the operations taking place in this sensitive part of the war-torn country will be limited to establishing a buffer zone around the city and securing the surrounding oil wells or extend to lifting the siege off the embattled city of Deir Ezzor where the Republican Guard and allied tribal forces have managed to valiantly fend off hundreds of vicious ISIS assaults on the Euphrates city for years on end.
