Press TV has conducted an interview with Collin Cavell, an author and lecturer in West Virginia, to discuss a recent rally by people in Bahrain calling for the immediate release of all political activists, including Bahrain’s senior opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mr. Cavell, why is such little attention paid to the current situation in Bahrain by the Western countries, who claim to be defendants of democracy and human rights?

Cavell: The West ignores what is going on in Bahrain, because it points to the hypocrisy of the United States’ government; it points to the outright lies of the United States’ government; it points to the manipulation of the internal affairs in Bahrain only to serve the US interests and to abandon the democratic rights of the people of Bahrain.

Press TV: How do you see the future of the revolution in Bahrain? Do you think that people would be able to make radical changes in the political system?

Cavell: It is a long problem that will not heal, because the people are determined to get rid of this undemocratic, unelected monarchy, this dictatorship that has no legitimacy within the country. What did Sheikh Salman call for? He called for the right of people to vote, and for that, he has been charged with overthrowing the government.
