Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has launched a scathing attack on his boss, David Cameron, for “pulling to the right” over benefit reforms, human rights and green issues, local media reported.

Nick Clegg slammed his coalition partner for attempting to appease the Conservative voters by putting aside, what he called as “compassionate conservatism”, British media reported.

Clegg said that the Prime Minister has put the Conservative “modernisation project into reverse” by lurching back to the right.

“The Tories are pulling to the right in an attempt to appease their base,” he wrote in an article for the Liberal Democrat Voice.

“Compassionate conservatism has been sidelined. So-called benefits scroungers have been back in the firing line, along with the European Convention on Human Rights.

“The blue team used to claim to have gone green, yet have now publicly denounced the importance of environmental protections.

“Despite millions of ordinary families feeling the pinch, the Conservatives resist making the tax and welfare systems fairer still – ruling out introducing a Mansion Tax or looking again at the benefits paid to very wealthy, even multi-millionaire, pensioners.”

Ahead of the local elections this week, he also accused Labour of swinging to the left, arguing the Liberal Democrats are the only party “staying put in the centre”.

“The irony is that, while Labour and the Conservatives are pulling opposite ways, they are headed in the same direction – backwards – simultaneously setting their parties’ modernisation projects into reverse,” he added.

This comes as political analysts in the UK believe the Conservatives would lose by a big margin in 2015 general elections after his coalition government’s austerity policies failed to make the country’s economy back on track.
