British PM defied again over EU referendum

Conservative MPs have defied British Prime Minister David Cameron again by urging that a referendum on Europe should be held on the same day as the next general election.

The defiance in Cameron’s political party comes after the UK Premier stated that he would not change his mind about holding an in/out vote on Britain’s membership with Europe by the end of 2017.

But despite his efforts to be firm with his colleagues’ split opinions on the European Union (EU), his Eurosceptic MPs are already preparing their next motion to force Cameron to pre-pone the referendum to May 7, 2015, the same time as Britain’s next election.

The Tory MPs claim that such a measure would increase the Tories’ hope at the election because it would look like they are the only party offering a vote on Europe.

Cameron’s allies are concerned that altering the course on the EU referendum date would fuel opposition Labour party opinions of him being “weak” and allowing his backbenchers to push him around.

Meanwhile, Cameron remains stubborn on the issue, claiming that “the date by which we hold this referendum isn’t going to change.”
