British public against Syria intervention: Poll

syria-poll-us-opposed.siA new survey has found overwhelming opposition among the UK public to any military intervention in Syria.

According to a ComRes survey for The Independent, two-thirds of British people oppose the US plans to attack Syria and want the UK to keep out of the escalating conflicts.

The study revealed that around 60 percent of Britons disagree that the US should launch air strikes against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the alleged use of chemical weapons near Damascus, while less than 30 percent agree.

Moreover, about 80 percent of British people believe any military strikes against Syria should first be sanctioned by the United Nations (UN).

More than 60 percent also said Iraq war experience in 2003 means the UK should avoid any military intervention in the Arab country.

Earlier last week, US President Barack Obama called for congress to authorize military action against Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, warned any military action without UN approval would be “an aggression”.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The UN has reported that more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.
