British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, bringing UK’s death toll since the 2001 US-led invasion to 267.

The soldier was killed by small arms fire near Sangin and not in any way connected to the ongoing major US-led “Operation Mushtarak” assault in the region, UK military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield said late Monday.

Operation Mushtarak was launched on February 13 to clear Taliban militants out of towns in Helmand.

“The patrol he was on was part of ongoing operations… to expand the area of security around the district center when he was shot and killed by small arms fire,” Wakefield said.

The incident occurred on the same day that NATO announced that Monday was another bloody day for its troops in Afghanistan, where, according to the International Security Assistance Force, six of its men were killed.
