Bush, Blair not welcome in Nigeria, protesters say

Nigerian police have arrested around 100 people protesting the presence of former US President George Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in their country.

Demonstrations were held on Sunday in front of a hotel in the Nigerian capital Abuja, where the former leaders were attending an award ceremony.

Nigerian police detained leading human rights activists and other protesters during the protest.

Activists say the two leaders fought illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which continue to cause suffering for the people of both countries.

“We called a protest to register our objection to the legacy of war and violence that was left behind by Tony Blair and George Bush,” Shehu Sani, president of the Civil Rights Congress in Nigeria, told the Financial Times from an Abuja police station.

“The police came in and rounded us all up,” Sani added.

The protest organizer says men with a bad record on human rights are not welcome in Nigeria.

The demonstrators say they wanted to show their anger at the anti-human policies of Bush and Blair.
