Canadian police physically abuse indigenous women

A Canadian First Nations activist says the indigenous women of the country are often victims of physical abuse by police.

“A national inquiry needs to be established with a full inquiry including sexual assault and other mishaps that are conducted by the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] on these women,” Autumn Eaglespeaker told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

“Aboriginal women don’t feel comfortable enough to go to the people who are supposed to be protecting them, which actually are the perpetrators,” she added.

Eaglespeaker also said the policy of the government of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is fascist and called for action to protect the rights of Native Canadians.

“So it is up to us as the Idle No More movement and individual citizens to stand together and to stand up to police brutality and to the government’s unilaterally enforcing their form of democracy, which really is more fascism,” she stated.

Indigenous groups complain that Canadian officials are unable to represent the British Royal Proclamation of 1793, which includes an agreement on the rights of the indigenous people’s territory in Canada.

In a report released on December 19, 2012, Amnesty International asked Canada to address human rights abuses in the country, particularly with respect to the rights of indigenous peoples.

Eaglespeaker noted that the Canadian people are witnessing a “complete erosion of democracy” under the prime ministership of Harper.
