Chavez finishes 1st chemotherapy round

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who is in Cuba for cancer treatment, says he has “successfully” finished the first round of chemotherapy.

“I finished the first round of chemotherapy I started a few days ago. This round ended successfully,” Chavez said in a phone interview with Venezuela’s state-owned television network VTV on Friday.

“Today, we are preparing for the second round. There will be several rounds in order to win this battle and eliminate all risk of malignant cells,” he further explained.

Earlier, the Venezuelan chief executive had an operation in Cuba during which a cancerous tumor was removed from his body.

On Saturday, Chavez returned to Cuba for an undetermined period to begin chemotherapy.

On July 19, Venezuela’s Finance Minister Jorge Giordani said Chavez would undoubtedly run for reelection next year despite his condition.

Before leaving for Cuba, the Venezuelan president delegated some of his powers to the country’s Vice President Elias Jaua and Finance Minister Jorge Giordani.
