Civil Defense Chief: US Unable to Launch Economic War of Attrition against Iran

Head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization Brigadier General Gholamreza Jalali underlined that the US foreign policy has weakened the country’s position and dollar value, adding that Washington cannot run economic war against Tehran in the long run.

“Today, the dollar has lost its position in the world and this has caused problems for the US because of Washington’s continued political pressures against Iran and (Washington’s) playing with dollar,” General Jalali said, addressing a meeting in the Northern province of Gilan on Sunday.

He warned of the enemies’ modern economic warfare against Tehran, meantime, saying that “the US economy lacks enough power for continued economic pressures on Iran”.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington would no longer remain part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and promised to re-impose the highest level of economic sanctions against Iran.

On July 8, the Iranian parliament’s research center readied a comprehensive plan that includes a detailed list of policies and moves to fight off sanctions as Washington sped up attempts to rally international support for intensified pressures on Tehran.

Also, Head of Iran’s Management and Planning Organization Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said earlier this month that President Hassan Rouhani’s government had proposed a dozen support packages to confront the US sanctions.

“After we realized that the US administration would re-impose its sanctions against Iran in two batches, the government designed 12 support packages to counter such sanctions,” Nobakht said in a meeting with the heads of the Parliament’s committees.

The official noted that the main areas dealt with in the support package include stabilizing liquidity, the budget, compensating for the adverse economic effects on people’s livelihood as well as supporting producers and contractors.

“Other areas of support were related to rail, air, marine and road transportation networks, agriculture and industry, ICT, and employment,” Nobakht added.
