Clumsy John Kerry suffers broken leg in cycling crash

A bike crash has left US Secretary of State John Kerry with a broken leg but”his life is not in any danger,” a US Embassy official in Geneva told NBC News on Sunday.

Meanwhile, John Kirby, spokesman for the US State Department, said that Kerry was flown to a Geneva hospital in Swiss, where he was examined for possible injuries.

“Secretary Kerry is stable and likely suffered a leg injury. He did not lose consciousness,” Kirby added.

He also added that the paramedics travelling with Kerry’s motorcade were present at the scene and examined the US secretary of state after his bike hit a curb.

The accident took place near Scionzier, southeastern France, 40km (25 miles) from the Swiss border.

Kerry was rushed to Hospital University Geneva (HUG), city’s main hospital, where X-rays were taken from his right leg.

It is not clear how long Kerry needs to stay hospitalized which means his plans to continue a four-country trip are put on hold.

He was scheduled to visit Madrid later Sunday to meet with Spain’s king and prime minister and then spend two days in Paris, attending an international anti-ISIL conference.

According to reports, Kerry’s femur is broken and he would come back to the United States.

The US Department of State said he would address the Paris conference via video-conference.

Cycling is a serious hobby of Kerry and he is said to be often taking his bike with him during diplomatic journeys.

The crash comes a day after Kerry’s meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as part of ongoing negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in Geneva to strike an agreement over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
