Cobra Gold war games begin in Thailand

Hundreds of Thai and American marines have begun an annual military exercise on Hat Yao beach, in Thailand’s eastern Rayong Province.

The maneuver titled ‘Cobra Gold’ is between the United States and Thailand. However, this year other Asian nations participate in the war games as well.

More than 800 US, Thai and South Korean marines stormed the beach on Thursday. Several helicopters clattered overhead and simulated explosions erupted along the shore.

The Cobra Gold exercise consists of field training exercises, and humanitarian and civic drills.

Singapore, Japan and Indonesia will also be participating in the three-week maneuvers. For the first time, South Korea will also be taking part in the multi-national event.

“South Korea is a leader in the Asia-Pacific region, and this just underscores their importance in the peace and stability within the region,” said Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, Commander of the US Army, Pacific.

The core exercise is being held for the 29th time.
