Commander: Iran Prepared to Cooperate with Indian Ocean Littoral States

A1132238 (1) Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari voiced Tehran’s preparedness to strengthen security cooperation with the regional and trans-regional states, specially those on the rims of the Indian Ocean.

“We are ready to cooperate with all regional and trans-regional states,” Sayyari said at a press conference here in Tehran on Monday.

“Specially” he added “we have announced our readiness to cooperate with the Indian Ocean states to ensure durable security.”

Sayyari also said that the Iranian fleet of warships, which is now passing through the Strait of Malacca, will enter the Pacific Ocean tomorrow.

“The 24th fleet, comprised of Khark chopper carrier warship and Sabalan destroyer, will exit the Strait of Malacca and enter the Pacific Ocean tomorrow,” he stated, adding that this will be the Navy’s first voyage in the ocean.

The Strait of Malacca is a narrow, 805 km stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The Strait of Malacca connects the Pacific Ocean to the East with the Indian Ocean to the West.

Sayyari further announced that the Iranian fleet is also due to visit China’s port city of Zhangjiagang and Sri Lankan capital city of Colombo.
