‘Critics slam UK media bias on Yemen war’

They say the first casualty of war is the truth and the ongoing bombardment of Yemen might be an unfortunate example of this. The third week of the Saudi aggression has seen hundreds of lives taken, thousands injured and over 100,000 displaced.

But for those looking for nuanced analysis and updates on the crisis, examples of good practice in the British media are hard to come by. The narrative is either over simplified to a sectarian battle or simply dropped from the news agenda entirely.This is not simply coincidence, argues opponents of the conflict.

Yemen already has the unfortunate distinction of being one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. this makes the media agenda and the narrative about what happens in the country and who the main players are something of a mystery .this plays into the western narrative about Yemen and the crisis in there but most importantly, it plays into the Saudi agenda.For a British media always so keen to highlight what it sees as bias in other reporting, the treatment of the Yemen crisis has been telling.

As the bombs continue to fall on the people of Yemen, the media response could go a long way in helping bring this tragedy to an end but if the current western media agenda is anything to by, help is a long way off.
