Dozens of Egyptian protesters injured in Giza

344273_Egypt-Cairo-protestDozens of the supporters of ousted Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, have been injured by security forces as the army-backed interim government continues to crack down on protesters.

The violence broke out on Tuesday when government forces fired tear gas and bird shot at pro-Morsi protesters in the country’s third largest city of Giza.

The clashes come a day ahead of Morsi’s trial on alleged charges of involvement in the killing of protesters in December 2012.

Supporters of the deposed leader have called for mass rallies to coincide with his trial on Wednesday.

The calls come in the face of the interim government’s warnings to confront the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been leading protests against the army since the ouster of Morsi.

On January 6, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said Morsi would not be allowed to have any visitors for a one-month period, starting on January 2.

Egypt has been the scene of almost daily protests since last July, when the military unseated the country’s first democratically-elected president after a year in office.

The military and its appointed interim government soon launched a brutal crackdown on the protesters, namely the members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The clampdown peaked last December after the interim government listed the Brotherhood as a “terrorist organization,” accusing it of being involved in a bomb attack that killed 16 people in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura.

The categorization authorizes the government to intensify the crackdown on the group’s leaders as well as their families.

On Monday, the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party lawyers said they have submitted a formal complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC), to investigate the crimes the military has committed against the leaders, members and supporters of the movement.
