ECO transportation plans benefit the entire region: Salehi

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says different plans implemented by the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), especially in the transportation sector, are beneficial for the whole region.

“The organization’s plans in different fields, especially in the transportation sector, are very beneficial for [the entire] region,” Salehi said in a meeting with ECO Secretary General Mohammed Yahya Maroofi in Tehran on Monday.

He expressed hope that ECO’s progress will continue through the cooperation of all regional countries.

The Iranian minister also praised Maroofi’s efforts to increase ECO’s activities and establish contacts with other international organizations in order to achieve ECO’s goals.

Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states.

In 1992, ECO expanded its members to include seven new countries of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
