Ecuador and Colombia restore diplomatic ties

Ecuador and Colombia have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations over a year after the neighboring South American states cut off ties.

Ties between the countries were severed in March 2008, after the Colombian military raided a camp used by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on the Ecuadorian territory.

The incident prompted Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa to end all diplomatic contacts with Colombia.

An Ecuadorian embassy will soon be established in Bogota, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said Thursday.

On Tuesday, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe travelled to Ecuador for the first time since the spat in order to attend the meeting of the Union of South American Nations.

Although Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa did not personally greet Uribe, he said the Colombian was “very welcome.”
