Egypt army denies bid to pardon Mubarak

Egypt’s ruling military council has rejected reports that it may pardon former president Hosni Mubarak or any of his family members.

The military council said in a statement on Wednesday that it would not intervene in judicial affairs.

“There is absolutely no truth to what has been reported by the media that the supreme council is moving towards a pardon for former president Mohammed Hosni Mubarak or his family,” the ruling council stated on its Facebook page.

Mubarak and his family members are being investigated over alleged corruption as well as the harsh crackdown on protesters that toppled the US-backed regime in February.

Mubarak has reportedly stated that he would ask the Egyptian people to forgive him and his family members in an address to the nation.

However, many Egyptians believe that an apology is not enough as it would not make up for the bloodshed and hardships inflicted on them by the Mubarak regime.

At least 846 people were killed during the uprising that led to Mubarak’s eventual fall.

Egypt’s judicial sources say Mubarak could face the death penalty if found guilty of ordering the killing of anti-regime protesters during the revolution.
