Egypt recalls ambassador, asks for UNSC meeting to discuss the Israeli attacks

Egypt has recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv for consultation in the wake of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, Egyptian presidential spokesman Yasser Ali said on Wednesday.

Ali told a press conference that Egypt also summoned the Israeli envoy to Cairo and handed him a protest note against the Israeli aggression.

He said that Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi extended condolences to the Palestinian people over the fall of victims in the Israeli raids.

He said that Morsi instructed the Egyptian envoy to the UN to call for the convening of an emergency meeting for the UN Security Council to discuss the aggression.

Ali also asked the Arab League secretary general to call for the convening of an urgent Arab foreign ministers meeting to discuss the aggression.

Egyptian foreign minister Mohammed Kamel Amre had condemned the Israeli attacks in statements to reporters during a meeting with Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

He described the Israeli military escalation as “very serious” and comes at a sensitive stage for the entire region.
