Political prisoners in Egypt are being tortured and abused following the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, Press TV reports.

According to testimonies from prisoners and those released, detainees are tortured and abused, even sexually, on a regular basis in Egypt.

All prisoners, including minors, are subjected to regular beatings, electrocutions, and verbal abuse.

“We have monitored several cases of physical and psychological abuse against political detainees in Egyptian prisons. What we are seeing now inside prison cells is even worse than what existed under ousted [Hosni] Mubarak,” political activist Mohamed Medhat said.

Many prisoners say they have been sexually abused or harassed by prison security guards.

Last month, about 100 Egyptian detainees complained of being tortured while in custody.

The army-backed government has denied such abuses.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since Morsi, the country’s first democratically-elected president, was ousted on July 3, 2013.

The military-backed authorities in November 2013 passed a law banning all but police-sanctioned protests. Since then, hundreds of anti-government protesters have been jailed for staging protests.

Following Morsi’s ouster, a number of Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters have also been sentenced to death.
