Egyptians protest in Cairo’s Liberation Square

Egyptian protesters continue their sit-in in Cairo’s Liberation Square, demanding the trial of those responsible for the bloodshed in the country.

The protesters are demanding a transparent trial for former dictator Hosni Mubarak and his sons. This comes as Mubarak is expected to stand trial on August 3 for the killing of protesters during the revolution.

The protesters have also condemned the clashes that injured more a thousand people on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 people were injured in the most recent scuffles between security forces and protesters in Cairo on June 29-30.

Meanwhile, protesters are planning a one million-strong march on Friday in the landmark Liberation Square. The protests are organized to pressure the ruling council to stop the military trials and also bring members of the former regime to justice.

“We will secure the exits and entrances of the square starting from Thursday to prevent outlaws from infiltrating,” DPA quoted a protest organizer as saying.

In a separate development, a rights group has urged the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to stop the military trials of civilians.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information says at least 10,000 civilians have been sentenced in military courts since the revolution in January.

The military has been in charge of the country after the downfall of Mubarak in February. Rights groups have criticized the army for using military force against demonstrators.

However, the armed forces have repeatedly denied the accusations.

Egyptians are still skeptical about a rapid transition towards democracy and civilian rule in the North African country.
