Sheikh of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb said that the country’s religious leaders support Iran’s efforts to uproot disunity among Muslims, and hoped for the materialization of unity among Muslims.

Speaking at a meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Cairo on Tuesday evening, Sheikh Tayyeb cautioned that the West is trying to create disunity among Muslims, and stated that Iran and Egypt can make joint efforts against such a conspiracy.

“We respect you (Ahmadinejad) as a person who is trying to create unity among Muslims.”

He added that al-Azhar religious leaders are trying to confront Islamophobia and hostility with Shiite and uproot disunity among Muslims.

“We hope your idea of creating unity among Muslims can be materialized,” Sheikh Tayyeb reiterated.

President Ahmadinejad is in Cairo at the invitation of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi to attend the 12th Summit meeting of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Last Tuesday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei warned Muslim nations about the plots hatched by enemies to sow discord in the Islamic community.

Addressing a group of Iranian officials and the foreign participants of the 26th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei felicitated birthday of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and stated that unity among the Islamic community was the main mission of the Holy Prophet.

The Leader pointed to the wave of the Islamic awakening in the Muslim World, and reiterated that the world arrogance targeted the Islamic Awakening movements and aims to divide the Muslims pitting them against each other.

“Therefore, the main duty of the elites in the Muslim world is to help expose the enemies’ plots and take serious efforts to materialize the motto of Islamic unity,” the Leader underlined.
