Egypt has received 10 Apache helicopters from the United States after Washington decided to lift its year-long freeze on the delivery of military aid to the country’s new rulers.

“They (helicopters) got there a few weeks ago,” AFP quoted an unnamed US senior administration official as saying on Saturday.

The attack helicopters are reportedly delivered to Egypt to help the North African country counter terrorist activities in the restive Sinai Peninsula.

On December 12, the US Congress allocated USD 1.3 billion military and economic aid to Egypt after lobbying from the Arab country along with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Jordan as well as pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.

US congressmen had partially frozen military aid to Cairo since the Egyptian army ousted former President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013.

Following Morsi’s deposal, the US halted the transfer of F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 tank kits, Harpoon missiles and Apache helicopters to the Cairo government.

In September, the Pentagon said that it would resume sending Apache helicopters to Egypt.

US Secretary of State John Kerry had also said in June that he was “confident” Cairo would receive the helicopter gunships soon. Kerry also certified that Egypt was meeting its obligations as a strategic partner.

The suspension of the US aid angered Egyptian authorities, leading to damaged Washington-Cairo relations.

Egyptian President Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi negotiated intensely with Kerry over the resumption of the military assistance.

The Sinai Peninsula has long been considered as a safe haven for gunmen who use the region as a base for their acts of terror.

Since the ouster of Morsi, assailants have launched almost daily attacks in the volatile region, killing members of security forces.
