Enemies failed to topple Syria government: Iran envoy

Syria army recaptures strategic heights in al-Qalamoun

An Iranian diplomat says enemies have failed in their attempts to topple the Syrian government, which is a main part of the anti-Israel resistance front.

“The plots of the enemies of resistance to topple the Syrian government, as one of the major pillars of the resistance front, have ended in failure; and every day we are witnessing further successes by Syria in the battles against the terrorists,” said Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the members of the central council of Lebanon’s Islamic Amal movement in Beirut on Wednesday.

Syrian military forces have been making gains against foreign-backed terrorists in the country.

Syrian soldiers recently destroyed a building reportedly used by the militants as a workshop to make explosive devices in the Housh Arab neighborhood of the mountainous al-Qalamoun region near the capital, Damascus. Syrian troops also seized large amounts of weapons and ammunition, destroying trucks equipped with heavy machine guns.

On Tuesday, Syrian government forces also carried out successful operations against foreign-backed militants in the towns of Assal al-Ward, Housh Arab and Jab’adin in the al-Qalamoun region.

Syria has been the scene of a deadly crisis since March 2011. Some reports say more than 140,000 people have so far been killed and millions displaced in the foreign-backed violence.

Roknabadi also pointed to the ongoing developments in Lebanon and the Muslim world, the Palestinian issue in particular, stressing the leading role of religious and political scholars in thwarting conspiracies hatched by the Israeli regime and its allies.

Members of the Islamic Amal movement, for their part, condemned the terrorist attacks being planned by Israel and carried out by extremist Takfiri militants against innocent people, highlighting the role of Muslim scholars to elucidate the true nature of these terrorists and the need for stronger unity among Muslim nations.
