At least 13 people have been killed and 26 others injured in a fresh wave of violence, including car bomb attacks, across Iraq.

On Tuesday, a car bomb explosion near a Shia mosque killed at least five people and injured 14 others in the town of Madain, some 30 kilometers southeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

In a similar attack carried out on the same day in Albu Jabir area of the western province of Anbar, a policeman lost his life and two others were wounded.

Earlier in the day, bomb attacks in northern Iraq also killed seven people and injured 10 others.

On August 10, some 70 people were killed and 200 others injured in a series of car bombings in Baghdad, while people were celebrating Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Iraq has seen a surge in violence since the beginning of this year. Some 671 people have been killed in the holy month of Ramadan alone.

On July 30, a day after a wave of 17 bombings across Iraq killed 60 people and injured scores of others, Iraq’s Interior Ministry said “The country is currently facing an open war from bloodthirsty sectarian forces that aim to plunge the country into chaos.”

The United Nations said on August 1 that a total of 1,057 Iraqis were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in July, making it the country’s deadliest month since 2008.

With the latest violence, attacks in Iraq have killed 3,396 people since the beginning of the year. According to the figures compiled by AFP, an average of 15 people killed each day.
