Envoy Urges Support for UN Resolution on World against Violence and Extremism

A senior Iranian diplomat called on all countries and international organizations to firmly support the implementation of a UN resolution that was recently approved based on the Iranian president’s World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal.
“President (Hassan) Rouhani’s proposal is a turning point that can bring about great global developments to achieve lasting peace and a world free of violence and extremism,” Iranian Ambassador to Serbia Majid Fahimpour said.

He underlined that since the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979 Iran has taken great strides to prevent violence and extremism and to promote peace and friendship among nations and remove divisions through dialog.

“The approval of the proposal by the UN bears testimony to Iran’s peace-promoting policies,” the envoy said.

On December 18, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Rouhani’s WAVE proposal, which calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism. The Iranian president had made the proposal in his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25.

Under the UN resolution adopted in accordance with the WAVE proposal, the General Assembly would urge member states to take “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character”.
