Equipment worth £1.5 million has gone missing from a base belonging to Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) this year, local media reports say.

Army equipment including, infrared cameras, body armour, fake blood and edible survival training candles were among the items vanished from an MoD’s storage depot, British national tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror reported on Wednesday.

Other losses from the base located in Donnington, Shropshire, England, were batteries and TV systems.

“Every effort is made to avoid losses of any kind,” a spokesperson for the MoD said.

Earlier in October, the MoD faced criticisms from senior military figures following reports of nearly £2 billion underspent in the department’s 2012-13 budget at a time when thousands of staff are being made redundant.

The MoD’s accounts show that the department spent only £37.7 billion of its £39.5 billion budget allocated in 2012-13.
