In this edition of Africa Today, we will address the hostile relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Eritrea broke away from Ethiopia in 1991, and the countries went to two years of war in 1998.

They remain bitter enemies. Their relationship encapsulates many challenges facing the African nation’s post-colonial era.

Ethiopia is a strong ally of the US and is seen as a safe area for the maintenance of US interests in the so-called war on terror.

On the other hand, Eritrea is being kept isolated and burdened by sanctions.
