EU to propose removal of Gaza siege

Following a deadly Israeli attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy, the EU is to make a proposal for the removal of Tel Aviv’s blockade of the coastal strip.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, whose country is holding the European Union’s rotating presidency, spoke of the proposal on Saturday, AFP reported.

“We are going to make a proposal over the next few days so that situations like the ones that happened (this week) will not be repeated,” he said.

The Monday attack on the international relief mission, Freedom Flotilla, which had set sail to break the almost-three-year-long blockade, killed at least nine human rights activists.

Moratinos said talks had been held on the matter with the office of the 27-nation bloc’s Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton.

“The European Union can play a leading role in this situation,” he added.

Spain joined the international anti-Israeli chorus following the assault.
