The European governments’ concerns about the rising number of European militants operating in Syria are “hypocritical” as the West has long been propping up terrorists in the Arab country, a political analyst tells Press TV.
“It would be hypocritical for these countries particularly those in Europe who are assisting in this rebel insurrection against the Presidency of Bashar al-Assad. It would be very hypocritical for them to voice this kind of concern when they are playing such an indelible role in helping to bring this about,” said Mark Glenn, co-founder of the Crescent and Cross Solidarity Movement in a Tuesday interview.
“If these European countries are truly concerned that these murderers are going to come back to their countries, then perhaps they should stop providing these individuals with the training and the funding that they are receiving in order to go and do these things in Syria,” Glenn pointed out.
European officials have warned that the influx of Europeans to Syria is increasing the threat of future terrorist attacks in Europe.
Intelligence sources say the number of German Takfiri militants trying to travel to Syria is on the rise.
German media reports say Takfiri militants from Germany have joined their counterparts in Syria to fight against the Syrian government.
Militants from Western countries, including the US, Canada, France and Britain have been fighting against the Syrian government.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
