European firms to form nuclear unit

Energy groups from France, Scotland and Spain have announced the establishment of a joint nuclear power unit based in the UK.

GDF Suez of France, SSE of Scotland and Iberdrola of Spain have developed NuGeneration Limited, a nuclear complex in Cumbria county in northwestern Britain.

The nuclear complex will have the capacity to produce up to 3,600 megawatts of power, according to AFP.

GDF Suez and Iberdrola each has a 37.5 percent stake in the company while SSE will own 25 percent.

“NuGen’s greatest strength is that it can draw upon the experience, resources and skills of three well established and respected energy companies that have experience of operating and delivering nuclear and other generation plants, across Europe,” said Alfio Vidal, who will lead the company together with Olivier Carret.

The complex is expected to become operational in 2023.
