Explosions rock southern Lebanon

A series of explosions have rocked the southern Lebanese region of Shehabiyeh near the Israeli border, causing a large fire, witnesses say.

The blasts ripped through a three-story building on the outskirts of Shihabiya, an area under the surveillance of United Nation’s peacekeepers and the Lebanese army, a Press TV correspondent reported on Friday.

There was no immediate report of casualties.

“The nature and cause of the explosions are not yet clear,” an army spokesman said, adding that troops have cordoned off the area while the army investigates the incident.

Some reports suggest that the house was used as an arms depot by Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah and that the explosions were triggered by fires outside the compound.

Hezbollah, however, has denied the report. The resistance movement says the blasts were caused by an electricity generator bursting into flames and igniting two barrels of diesel nearby.
