Explosives remains found on warship

South Korea’s defense minister has confirmed that the remains of torpedo explosives were found on the wreckage of the navy vessel sunk by a blast leaving 46 sailors killed.

“It is true that traces of RDX, an explosive used in the production of torpedoes, have been detected,” the ministry said in a Monday statement.

The latest report suggests a torpedo was the likeliest cause of the disaster, however, the South Korean ministry did not specify who may have launched it.

A 1,200-tonne South Korean warship was split in two near the disputed maritime border with the North in late March. Suspicion has fallen on the North.

Some 46 South Korean sailors were killed when the warship sank, souring the relationship between the two Koreas.

South Korean defense minister Kim Tae-Young vowed retaliation for the killing of the soldiers saying “those responsible for killing our soldiers must pay the price.”
