Fatal mosque attack shows Egypt failure to secure Sinai, even link between terrorists and Sisi regime

Nearly 240 worshipers were killed and over 130 others wounded in a bomb and gun assault that targeted a packed mosque in Egypt’s militancy-riddled Sinai Peninsula on Friday, making it the bloodiest day in the North African country’s modern history.

Talking to Press TV, political commentator Mustafa Abbas said the bloody mosque bombing shows the Egyptian government has failed to consolidate its grip on Sinai Peninsula, a northern region rife with deadly terrorist attacks, despite its long-time military campaign against Daesh-affiliated militants operating there.

He further pointed to a decline in the number of terrorist assaults in Sinai, which has been under a state of emergency since 2014, adding, however, that Cairo’s “failure” to restore full stability to the region could “impact negatively the security situation” in the entire country.
