Father, baby fatally shot in New Orleans

A 25-year-old man and his 7-month-old son were shot dead in an apartment ambush in New Orleans on Wednesday night.

The two were riding towards the Crescent City Connection just before 9 pm when someone opened fire on the car, police said. The man was killed at the scene but the baby, shot once in the left side of the head, was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police believe the shooter knew the man who was killed. But no suspects or motive has been named in the case. Authorities ask anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call Crimestoppers at 504.821.1111 ot toll-free at 1.877.903.7867.

“Our detectives are doing all they can to gather information and identify those involved,” The New Orleans Police Department said in a statement. “But we need people who know something about this to call us. It’s the decent thing to do. It’s the right thing to do. And it’s our most effective way to put an end to this senseless violence,” the statement said.

Since the deadly shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 which left 20 first-grade school children and six staff members dead, more than 30,000 people have been killed in gun violence across the US, according to slate.com.

A scientific study published by the American Journal of Medicine in September found that the rate of gun violence is positively correlated with gun ownership rates, supporting arguments put forth by many critics who blame the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the US for the high rate of gun violence in the country.
